Two reminders can do different jobs
A reminder a week ahead gives you time to arrange a gift or make a reservation. A reminder on the birthday gives you a moment to call. Keeping those separate makes each title clear: plan something, then show up.
Save the detail you might forget
A book they mentioned, a favorite cake, or a place they want to visit can be a useful note for your future self. Keep it brief and consider who else has access to the device where you store it. The note should help you act, not turn the reminder into a research project.
Choose the lead time around the gesture
Posting a card, ordering a gift, and making a call have different time requirements. Start from what you want to do and allow time for that specific gesture. The most elaborate plan is not always the one someone will appreciate most.
Let next year stay flexible
A yearly repeat saves entering the date again. It does not have to lock you into the same plan. When the reminder comes around next year, edit the note and choose something that fits the person’s life now.
